Coffee and Conversation

Manhattan Project

A last minute cancellation: we will discuss the Manhattan Project, however, Burt is unable to lead the discussion

25 April – Burt Kelchner – Burt is a WWII Army veteran who was an enlisted man in the Army Corps of Engineers, between 1943 and 1946, and became one of about 500 members of the Corps of Engineers Special Engineering Detachment (SED). SED’s were all enlisted, and screened by the Army for there respective qualifications and assignments. As a Technical Sargent E-6, he was assigned to Los Alamos Labs, NM, for the Manhattan Project, where he worked as a research chemist under Dr. Edward Wickers. Burt’s college degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering paved the way for his assignment to achieve ultra high purity in the processing of Uranium 235, used in the “Little Boy” Atom Bomb, dropped on Hiroshima

Coffee and Conversation

July Download 157

The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum will be hosting Coffee and Conversation with guest speakers from 9–11 a.m.  on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.  The public is invited to hear veterans share their stories over coffee and light refreshments in an informal setting at the museum.

There will be an opportunity to watch short videos, learn about the broader context of the military conflict they were engaged in, and ask questions of the speaker and other veterans.  Afterwards visitors can tour the museum or research the topics discussed in the museum’s library.   The talks are free of charge.
